Pray About Anything You Want…oh, well, maybe not THAT
A week in VBS this summer has really opened up Girlchild’s mind in terms of God. Randomly I will hear:
“Mama, does God really know what’s on your mind before you say it?”
“Is God really my friend?”
And, “Can I really pray and talk to God about anything I want?”
Of course I answer, “Yes.”
So I should not be surprised when the following conversations have sprouted from these questions this summer:
“Mama, I am praying to God that all the mosquitoes DIE!”
“I prayed that this day would never end.”
“Mama, I just prayed to God that all the skunks everywhere die.”
“You know, I just asked God today if I could be royalty when I grow up.”
Me: “Yeah? What’d he say?”
Girlchild: “I didn’t get an answer yet.”
“I am praying for new toys tonight,” she said one night before bedtime. Okay, I think, this is ridiculous. I have to say something.
“Sweetie….you CAN pray for anything…but to pray for more toys…I don’t know that God is going to answer that one. You have a MILLION toys already, too many in fact. There are poor kids who don’t have any toys at all, do you know that? I would pray for something you NEED, or something that….isn’t a toy at least.”
“Hmm, well…maybe if I pray that I am a poor kid who has no toys, THEN I can pray for more toys and God will bring me NEW toys.”
“Good night, sweetie.” Just like Kenny Rogers, Mama knows when to fold ’em, knows when to walk away, and knows when to run.
